The innovative and climate-smart and water-saving technologies like hydroponics, bioponics, and aquaponics (i.e., the combination of recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) with hydroponics), hold immense potential for both rural and urban settings. These technologies can be modularly combined to simultaneously address the WEFE Nexus challenges, a comprehensive approach often referred to as 'multisolving'.
Presently, global malnutrition impacts around 2 billion people, leading to micronutrient deficiencies (commonly known as "hidden hunger") and obesity issues for 0.5 billion adults. Despite global efforts, progress towards Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 2.1 and 2.2 – ensuring access to safe, nutritious, and sufficient food all year-round and eliminating malnutrition – has been limited (FAO, 2018). Transformative approaches in agriculture are thus urgent.
Soilless cultivation in constrained urban spaces, like walls and rooftops, spans from low- to high-tech solutions. Especially aquaponics holds the potential to maximize productivity on the same spatial footprint, avoiding the negative ecological impact of conventional aquaculture or crop farming.
This series of webinars focuses on capacity building for soilless technologies (aquaponics, hydroponics, bioponics). It aims to provide the theoretical background for future operators/owners of aquaponic/bioponic systems, especially in arid countries.
The webinar is conceived in two parts.
