Competition Purpose. The 2023 Student Unmanned Systems EELISA competition is intended to foster interest in Unmanned Vehicle Systems (UVS), particularly Unmanned Aerial Systems (UAS) and other types of UVS (such as Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV), Unmanned Sea Vessels (USV)), to encourage our students' interest in UVS technologies and contribute to their careers, and to engage students in a challenging mission. The competition requires students to design, integrate, report on, and demonstrate a UVS capable of autonomous movement and navigation, remote sensing via onboard payload sensors, sensor fusion, and execution of a specific set of tasks.

Competition Overview. The competition is open to teams of students from universities and colleges around the world, especially from EELISA partners, who are interested in advancing the field of unmanned and electrical drone technologies. The competition has two phases: the Technical Design and Flight Readiness Review Presentation, and the Mission Demonstration. The presentation details a team’s UVS design and the team’s testing and preparedness, and the demonstration simulates a mission in which the UVS and team are evaluated. The mission demonstration consists of autonomous tasks, obstacle avoidance, object detection, drone delivery and indoor search, choosed by each team accordingly to their competing strategy. The mission demonstration will be held at Aerodromul Clinceni from September 25th to 29th, 2023. The challenge will consist of several steps, including: Developing and programming drones to complete tasks autonomously; On-line social media presentations of teams work (YouTube videos); In-person challenge event; Award ceremony and recognition of the winning teams; Competition report as an extended abstract aimed at giving visibility to the work carried out by the FTEM EELISA Community as well as by EELISA students and staff at the First EELISA International Conference, Bucharest 04-06 October 2023.

    Participation requirements

Student teams from EELISA universities or other universities are welcomed in the competition. A maximum of 25 teams will be accepted in the competition on first-come-first-served base. Each Team must be composed of Development Team and Competition Team. The development team must consist of undergraduate or graduate students who attend school full-time for at least one semester during the 2022-2023 academic year. The team must have at least 3 students from the school being represented and may have students from other schools. A school may have multiple teams, but a student may only be on 1 team. Competition team is composed of students which are part of the Development Team and will participate in the Mission Demonstration. The Competition Team must be at most a 10-person subset of the Development Team. The competition will provide some resources for these 10 students. Extra resources may be available for purchase. Competition Team is mandatory to have: Team Captain: One member of the competition team will fill the role of team captain during the competition year. This student will be the primary point of contact for the judges. All questions, comments, statements, and deliverables must be submitted by the team captain. The judges must be immediately notified of any team captain change. Safety Pilot: The Safety Pilot used during the competition can be a student, the adviser, or non-student. The Safety Pilot must complete the remote pilot licensing procedure required by art. 8, § (1) and art. 9 din UE Regulation nr. 2019/947 and present the certificate of completion at safety inspection and at the flight line. While the UVS occupies the runway or airspace, the Safety Pilot must not have any other roles and must maintain continuous unaided visual line of sight with the vehicle (no FPV). If the Safety Pilot performs any other tasks during mission time, the mission will be terminated. The Safety Pilot counts as one of the members of the competition team. If the pilot is not a member of the development team, then the pilot is limited to safety related functions and communication and must not advise or participate in other roles. GCS Operator: The Ground Control Station (GCS) operator is responsible for operating the autopilot including setting parameters, uploading mission objectives like waypoints, monitoring for performance and compliance, and intervening as necessary. While the UVS occupies the runway or airspace, the GCS Operator must not have any other roles and must maintain situational awareness of the UVS, the autopilot subsystem, and the ground control station. For example, the GCS Operator cannot operate payloads (e.g. cameras, ODLC review, air drop). If the GCS Operator performs any other tasks during mission time, the mission will be terminated. The GCS Operator counts as one of the members of the competition team. Adviser: Each team must have a school faculty member/adviser or official point of contact (POC) from the team’s school and shall take full responsibility for the students. The adviser will also be admitted to all competition events. The adviser will be permitted to observe the team at the flight line but is forbidden from communicating or otherwise assisting the team during setup, mission, or tear down. While the adviser may teach concepts, answer questions, provide high-level guidance, and review deliverables before submission, the students must design, manufacture, and operate the system on their own and must produce all deliverables on their own.
