Modern buildings have an increasing number of different components for the efficient generation, storage and consumption of energy, e.g. batteries, photovoltaic panels, fuel cells, heat pumps, hot water tanks and urban wind turbines among others. Furthermore, part of the energy load – notably the heating load – features a certain amount of inherent flexibility, meaning that it can be shifted in time without disrupting end-user comfort, in order to take advantage of low energy tariffs or surplus energy production from local intermittent units. Electric mobility is also projected to increase considerably over the coming years, thereby providing an additional form of storage that can be exploited for building management. The aim of the project work is to develop a control system that takes into account the features of locally installed energy components, weather forecasts and energy price data in order to achieve optimal overall performance by minimising operating costs and/or carbon emissions. The model can also be extended to account for building thermal dynamics or for the optimal determination of energy asset dimensioning and ratings.
