Project Management for a Projectified Society
To provide better sensitized and prepared graduates to successfully manage projects that transform Society and solve global challenges
Projectification refers to the increasing socio-economic activity that is being implemented and managed as projects. The importance of projects as a fundamental instrument of action may be observed at the European Union level, where the word "project" is present in the vast majority of planning documents and frameworks promoted by the European Institutions. A large fraction of the total EU budget is managed through different programmes and project funding mechanisms and projects are implemented by entities in the private sector, by public administrations and also by civil society organisations.
Project Management is the professional discipline that, based on internationally established and recognized standards, tools, and good practices, deals with planning, administering, organizing, coordinating, and supervising all the work necessary in a project to ensure the achievement of the objectives under the established constraints in the most effective and efficient possible way. The use and adoption of Project Management generally yields to increase efficiency, effectiveness, sustainability, and impact of projects in any field of socio-economic activity. As a transversal discipline for students, developing Project Management knowledge, skills and competences is essential to anyone participating in projects in any role, from team members to decision makers. All EELISA Engineers should have essential knowledge and skills for Project Management as engineers are very frequently working in a project-based environment. By fostering and researching on open and accessible Project Management solutions, the community would be contributing to the democratization of engineering interdisciplinary education. The adoption of Project Management solutions would increase the effectiveness, efficiency, sustainability and impact of projects, and the Community would be indirectly contributing to all projects that are impacting society following the 2030 SDG.
The volume of resources currently dedicated in the European Union to finance projects of all kinds, oriented to social challenges, has reached a level never seen since the pandemic took place. Globally, it is estimated that more than 50% of the world's business-related economy is channeled through projects, with a growing trend. And yet, project management professionals assume very high failure rates (delays, cost overruns, etc.), which affect the success and therefore the achievement of objectives.
The mission of the university is to provide professionals who can meet the needs of society, and today society needs more and better project managers. This EELISA Community intends to align with this mission and improve the technique and ethics of future project managers.
