The Institute of Geography seeks motivated candidates for six-year position at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) in Erlangen, Germany. Two PhD positions are available within the project. The position will preferably start in September 2024. The DELIGHT Framework project is a 3-4-year project funded by the Elite Network of Bavaria and aims to develop a coupled modelling suite to simulate hydrological resources in any glacierised mountain catchment, from precipitation, through glaciers, to downstream runoff, in order to investigate the hydrological risks associated with climate change in mountainous environments.

Your Tasks

The second positionwill focus primarily on the hazards associated with glacier retreat, particularly glacier lake outburst floods (GLOFs), and will involve identifying possible GLOF locations, numerical simulation of GLOFs, and eventual implementation of a machine-learning emulator for them. The position also requires some fieldwork in the European Alps to collect training and validation data.

Your Profile

Necessary qualifications: A Masters degree in a related subject(such as glaciology, geoscience, applied mathematics, engineering, computer science). Desirable qualifications: Previous experience in numerical modelling, machine learning, and glacial hydrology would be an advantage. Previous fieldwork experience in glaciological environments is also desirable.

Further information

Terminated research project Candidates will be based at the Institute of Geography at FAU (https://www.geographie.nat.fau.de/), with a lively working environment and many research interests. The Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU) is seeking to augment the number of women in research and teaching and specifically addresses female scientists to apply for this position.
